onyx

What kind of stone is marble?

Marble is derived from the Greek word mar morose which means shining. The brand name of this stone in the world of onyx means clear and bright. In the international market, marble refers to stones that are made of layers with clear and transparent crystals. In geology, these stones are called banded calcite. These stones are extracted in different types and have different characteristics and applications. Marble has many differences with marble, for example, this stone allows light to pass through and is mostly decorative.

The transparency of this stone is so great that the viewer will see an image of a rough sea in front of him. Marble is a calcareous metamorphic stone and it is formed from the metamorphosis of limestone. The name of the main mineral that makes up marble is calcite {caco3}, which is also found in other limestones such as limestone and travertine. Each stone has unique characteristics according to its constituent mineral and the way it is formed. One of its most important disadvantages is its high softness and fragility.

How is marble formed?

When limestone is affected by high pressure and temperature, it transforms and marble is formed as a result. In the places where travertine is mined, marble can also be mined because this stone can be obtained from the metamorphosis of travertine. Marble is formed in the mouth of spa springs or caves. Among the minerals that make up this stone, we can mention things like graphite, pyrite, mica, dolomite, aragonite and iron oxide. Unlike marble and granite, marble is formed on the surface of the earth. The process of its formation is that when the water reaches the mouth of the spring, mineral materials are deposited inside it and create skins of calcite crystals.

The difference in the amount of water flow causes changes between the layers and creates impurities in the marble, which causes diversity in the marble stones, but the purest state of the marble is very white and transparent. Its color variation is based on the type and amount of impurities. For example, yellow or brown color is caused by hydrated iron oxide, red or pink is caused by anhydrous or dehydrated iron oxide, and gray is also caused by the presence of manganese and charcoal materials. Marble is often found in yellow-brown colors, but it is also available in white, light to dark yellow, honey, red, or light to dark green colors. Due to the changes in water flow, different designs of this stone are created, such as striped, wavy or spotted marble.
